ALISON BECHDEL, female, reads age 43, Mezzo-Soprano (E3-D5): Lesbian cartoonist; wry, pragmatic, super intelligent; she is at a standstill artistically and is re-examining her own life and her sometimes difficult relationship with her father, determined to piece together a truer version of her father’s life than the one she’s hung onto since he died.

BRUCE BECHDEL, male, plays ages 33 to 43, Baritone (B2-G4): Alison’s father, a closeted gay man. He is a high-school English teacher and funeral home director who spends his spare time on the historic restoration of his home; a complex man with a hot temper as a result of years of repression; he can be caring and attentive to his children but is also quick to anger.

HELEN BECHDEL, female, plays ages 36 to 46, Mezzo-Soprano (G3-E5): Alison’s mother. Intelligent, composed, with a quiet coiled intensity; has spent her life trying to be a good mother and wife while turning a blind eye to her husband’s affairs with other men; eventually she becomes frustrated and exhausted by her tumultuous, emotionally abusive marriage.

MEDIUM ALISON, female, reads age 19, Mezzo-Soprano (G3-E5): Alison Bechdel as a freshman at Oberlin College, discovering her sexuality. Incredibly well-read and hyper-intelligent, her uncertainty about who she is makes her socially awkward at times.

JOAN, female, reads early 20s, Alto (G3-C5): A student at Oberlin. She exudes a confident, sexual energy, with a dry sense of humor. Unlike Alison, Joan is very comfortable in her skin and openly identifies as a lesbian.

ROY / PETE / MARK / BOBBY JEREMY, male, plays ages 16-28, Tenor (E3-A4): One actor who plays the following characters – Roy, a handsome young man Bruce hires to do yard work; Pete, a mourner who visits the funeral home; Mark, a high school junior; Bobby Jeremy, the good looking lead singer of a band in Alison’s imagination.

SMALL ALISON, female, reads age 9-12, Alto (A3-E5): Alison Bechdel as a child. Precocious and opinionated, on the cusp of finding herself and forming her own views on how a girl her age should behave and dress; confident and intelligent.

CHRISTIAN BECHDEL, male, reads age 9-12, (Must be able to sing D5): Alison’s older brother; oldest of the three children; he tries to be the leader but is sometimes overshadowed by Alison’s strong personality.

JOHN BECHDEL, male, reads age 6-8, (Unchanged voice): Alison’s younger brother; like most boys his age, he is full of energy with a quirky imagination; looks up to his siblings.
