Classic Stage Company (CSC) seeks a part-time House Manager for its upcoming production of Macbeth with the possibility of extension. This position will serve a crucial role as part of the Audience Services team at CSC, an award-winning non-profit Off-Broadway theater company committed to reimagining classic stories for contemporary audiences. CSC is a home for New York’s finest established and emerging artists to grapple with great works of the world’s repertory that speak directly to the issues of today.


The House Manager ensures the comfort and safety of our audiences upon their arrival at the theater, during the performance, and as they exit the space. The House Manager also helps lead customer service standards at CSC and should be devoted to nurturing the relationship between CSC and its audience. Candidates must be personable with excellent customer service instincts, be able to creatively solve problems, and possess a great sense of humor. 


Reporting to the Audiences Services Manager and the Assistant General Manager, this position is part-time (about 30 hours per week) and is primarily based out of the company’s Lynn F. Angelson Theater at 136 East 13th Street. Additional hours may be required, largely dependent upon programming at the theater. This position requires availability almost entirely in the evening and on weekends.


Duties will include but are not limited to:


  • Managing the opening and closing of the house at all performances
  • Supervising, training, and scheduling volunteer ushers
  • Maintaining standard, timely, and concise intermissions
  • Organizing communication between CSC admin staff, box office, café, and stage management/production staff before, after, and during performances
  • Leading and organizing late seating procedures
  • Assisting with special seating arrangements
  • Serving as a general ambassador to our audiences for all things CSC
  • Creating accurate and thorough per-performance house and ticketing reports
  • Helping maintain a clean theater, lobby, and restrooms
  • Assuring adherence to strict safety and security protocols


Applicants must be punctual, efficient multitaskers with strong communication skills. Applicants should have at least one year’s customer service experience. Prior front-of-house/box office/ushering experience is a plus. Applicants must be available from October 8 through December 15, 2019.


If not previously certified, upon hiring, the House Manager will be expected to attain a Certificate of Fitness for Indoor Place Of Assembly Safety Personnel through the Fire Department – Bureau of Fire Prevention. Study materials, letter of recommendation, and payment for any associated fees required to attain this certificate will be provided by CSC.
