[BERNHARDT WICHMANN III (OLD BEN)] Male, follow from mid-60s to 84. Tall. White haired. Scruffy. He is a mute. Must be a strong, detailed physical actor as role requires little speech but he is our protagonist. He has lived through war, tragedy, success and illness and now has settled in his little single room in NYC on East 74th St. Reactive, joyful, sensitive and isolated. Must be able to sing - not huge range. Baritone.

[BERNHARDT WICHMANN III (YOUNG BEN)] Male, follow from 19 to mid-40s. Tall. Lean. Black haired. Smart, handsome with a winning smile. Classic American leading male with big energy. Must be a strong singer. Tenor. Must feel matched/connected to Old Ben. Comfortable mover.

[JORGE GRISALES] Male, late-40s. Columbian. Doorman. Big, jolly man. Warm, caring and cuddly. A good-hearted, family man who arrived in America with hopes of opportunity and a fresh start. He struggles with English and, over time, becomes Ben’s greatest friend. Must be a strong singer. Tenor - Baritone. Comfortable mover.

[JUAN ARIAS] Male, late 40s. Columbian. Doorman. Short, smart, welcoming man. Slicker than Jorge and is a far more competent English-speaker. A joker and, although he also travelled from Columbia in search of a better life, he has already embraced becoming a true New Yorker. Will be required to multi-role.

[PAT] Female, follow from mid 60s to 80s. Small, tough, silver-haired Irish woman. Originally from Rosscrea but has lived in NYC since her early 50s. She has been a nurse, a pharmacist, a divorcee but now she is retired. She lives in Ben’s building, two floors above him, and becomes his care giver and friend. Must be a strong singer. Alto.

[JAMES] Male, follow from early 30s - early 60s. Tall, dark-haired and classically handsome. Ben becomes very close friends with James and there is a suggestion of a romantic connection between them. He is charming and soft in nature. Must be a very strong singer. Pure tone. Tenor. Strong mover.

[HELEN] Female, Mid-20s. Beautiful, soft, gentle-natured. Ben’s older sister. We see her in their hometown of Davenport, which she never leaves. She cares for her brother but struggles with his leaving home. Must be a very strong singer. Soprano. Strong mover. Will be required to multi-role.

[JOAN] Female, Mid-30s - 40s. Wealthy, Upper East Side reporter. Glamorous and eccentric. She became close friends with Ben when he moved into East 74th St. Must be a strong singer. Mezzo- Soprano. Strong mover. Will be required to multi- role.

[LUCY/GIRL] Female, 20’s to play younger. Multi-track role. Young female to play various roles including little girl, Kelsey, aged 10 and Lucy, a kind-hearted New Yorker in her late 20s. Must be confident, versatile soprano, comfortable in different musical styles. Required to sing jazz and opera. Strong mover.
