DESCRIPTION

Columbia University School of the Arts will hold an open call for APSUCIEMS, a new play by MFA playwriting candidate Andrey Uspenskiy, directed by Jacob Basri.

About APSUCIEMS

Adultery and heartbreak on the banks of the Baltic during the last gasps of the Soviet Union. An uncomfortable trio jokes desperately about the political and the personal. What defines us? What haunts us? What can we leave behind? And in the end, how much life can we fit in before the sun goes down?

We are interested in seeing all types of actors! 30 years pass between act one and act two, but we are interested in having the same actor play both ages. Anyone who can play somewhere between the ages listed is encouraged to audition.

Rehearsals will take place at Columbia University from January 16th through February 3rd. They will be held in the evening on weekdays and in the afternoon on weekends. Performance Dates: Friday, February 8th, Saturday, February 9th, Sunday, February 10th.

Please submit a headshot and resume to ApsuciemsColumbia@gmail.com and the role you would like to read for.

Character Breakdown:

Elena: 23 in act one and 53 in act two. A member of the intelligentsia. She is married but also having an affair with Mark. She has recently discovered that she’s pregnant, but she’s not sure who the father is.

Oleg: 20 in act one and 50 in act two. Oleg is in love with Elena. He wants to be seen as an intellectual but doesn’t quite fit in at the literary circle. He eventually makes a lot of money working in tech.

Mark: 43 in act one and 73 in act two. A professor, tutor, and head of the literary circle. He is having an affair with Elena in act one and is very possibly Ksenia’s father.

Ksenia: 29. Elena’s daughter, a graphic designer. Grew up largely in post-Soviet Russia with a fair amount of privilege. She’s married with a child, but is dissatisfied with her life and wants to move to America.
