BREAKDOWN

SYNOPSIS:
Nya, an inner-city public high school teacher, is committed to her students, but desperate to give her only son, Omari, opportunities they’ll never have. When a controversial incident at his upstate, prestigious and mostly white, private school threatens to get him expelled, Nya must confront his rage and her own choices as a parent. But will she be able to reach him before a world beyond her control pulls him away?
Dominique Morisseau returns with this powerful and poetic chronicle of injustice that exposes the cracks in our education system and the power of a mother’s love.

SEEKING:
[NYA] Female, African American, 35 – 40. A single mother doing her damndest to raise her teenage son, Omari, with much difficulty. A public-school teacher inspiring her students. Strong, but burningout. A smoker. Sometimes a drinker. Holding together by a thread.

[XAVIER] Male, African American, 35 – 40. A single father struggling to connect to his son, Omari. Wounded relationship with his ex-wife, Nia. He is financially stable and emotionally impoverished. A marketing executive. A man who has left his past behind.
