Posting Details Position Information Position Title Program Director for Arts Education Type of Position Administrative Job Function Under the supervision and in support of the Associate Dean for Student Life, the Program Director for Arts Education provides visionary leadership for arts education programs in Student Life, including management of the Glicker-Milstein Theatre, advising student performance groups, and producing the Summer Festival. The mission and vision of Student Life are grounded in social justice principles, forming the foundation for our work. The Program Director will contribute to the overall goals of Student Life, with a focus on arts education programming. The Program Director will support the general operations of Student Life and act as a thoughtful steward of College resources. Department Student Life Reports to Title Associate Dean for Student Life Full or Part Time Full Time Number Of Months 12 months/year Work Schedule General office hours dependent on production and program schedule. Evening and weekend work required. Position Summary Information Essential Duties Summary 1. Develop and implement Student Life arts education programs, centering social justice principles and student learning. 2. Manage the Glicker-Milstein Theatre, Lobby and support spaces, including establishment of policies and procedures, fiscal oversight, scheduling, equipment maintenance, staffing, and publicity. 3. With the GMT Theatre Coordinator, facilitate technical preparation and support of all events and performances in the GMT 4. Liaise with the Theatre department, Registrar, Events Management, and campus partners to assist with scheduling classes, shows and events, and provide support for programs in the GMT . 5. Manage Urban NY program with colleagues from Columbia University. 6. Plan and implement campus-wide events and leadership workshops using arts education principles, to increase appreciation and awareness of different artistic endeavors. 7. Develop and implement Alternative Spring Break - Performing Arts NY program, in collaboration with colleagues at Columbia University as appropriate. 8. Produce, develop, and implement the Barnard Summer Arts Festival - a summer theatre program for students featuring their original work. 9. Advise Junior Class Council, theatre and performance student clubs. 10. Supervise and support the GMT Theatre Coordinator. 11. Create, develop, and implement ongoing assessment of learning outcomes and programs. 12. Participate in and contribute to Student Life programs and operations. 13. Serve as a member of committees as assigned by the Associate Dean, including Columbia Pre-Calendaring committee. 14. Support evening and weekend events as required. 15. Knowledge Skills and Abilities • Knowledge of current theatre and production management practices, including updating and maintenance of theatre equipment. • Demonstrated knowledge of general theatre technology (Lighting, Sound, Projection, ION , Q-Lab). • Knowledge of arts education principles and their application in a college environment. • Ability to work on multiple projects and prioritize tasks. • Ability to absorb detail and anticipate needs. • Innovative and open to new ideas, approaches, and perspectives. • Effective oral and written communication skills. • Respect for all identities and experiences. • Consideration for multiple perspectives, values, and differences. • Strong skills with event planning, facilitation, and team building. • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment. • Ability to adhere strictly to rules regarding confidential information and ethical code of conduct. • Ability to work flexible hours; must be willing to work evenings and weekends as required. Required Qualification Summary • Bachelor's Degree in Theatre Studies/Fine Arts, Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, or related field. • Minimum three years of experience in theater productions, advising, events management, and/or facilities management. • Experience managing and supervising administrative and student employees in an educational environment. • Demonstrated interest in student development, identity development, and experience in working with diverse communities and across multiple identities. • Strong administrative, organizational, and communication skills. • Excellent computer skills with demonstrated ability with websites, desktop publishing, googleapps, and Microsoft Office. Preferred Qualification Summary • Master's Degree in Theatre Studies/Fine Arts, Higher Education Administration or related field. • Three to five years' experience in theatre management and/or student affairs working with diverse communities. • Interest in working in a small liberal arts college or familiarity with principles of liberal arts education. • Understanding of the history and significance of women's colleges. Physical Demands Summary • Ability to perform customary office tasks such as computing and answering the telephone. • Ability to lift items weighing up to 40 lbs. • Ability to work in elevated environments (catwalks, lighting grids, etc.) • Physically fit to carry tools, equipment and materials. • Ability to walk, stand and/or sit for prolonged periods of time. • Ability to perform customary office tasks such as sitting, walking, standing, computing, and answering telephone for moderate to prolonged periods of time combined with light to moderate reaching, bending and lifting.
