Seeking Actors for New Play
**About the Play
Seeking Asian actors for "Speaking As Then," a new play by a Columbia University MFA second-year playwright, Ruoxin Xu. Synopsis: On the eve of New Year celebrations in Beijing, Tang Desheng’s children gather in their childhood home to debate the city’s plan to buy out their father’s valuable old apartment. When Dan (Tang Meng), who emigrated to America twenty years earlier, arrives with his American-born daughter, Abby, the family struggles to communicate and opens old wounds. All the actors speak in English, but in the vein of Indecent, most of the characters are actually speaking Mandarin, while the two Chinese-American characters are the only characters really speaking English, and one of them cannot understand their family at all.

Tang Ze (Age range: 25-50) 49 years old; Tang Desheng’s eldest son; twenty years ago, he decided not to participate in a democratic movement, which led to a profound conflict between him and his younger brother; he works hard to give his daughter the best life, however, he makes the same mistake as many parents: he thinks his daughter is too young to learn about politics.
Dan (Tang Meng) (Age range: 25-50) 47 years old; Tang Desheng's middle son; he was an activist during his youth but emigrated to America twenty years ago and has since become more conservative; recently divorced; grappling with his relationship to China and the events that led to his emigration to the United States; has a strained relationship with the family he left behind.
Hu Yu (Age range: 18-25) 10 years old; Tang Chao's son; his parents have enrolled him in violin, calligraphy, and Go lessons so that he’ll be competitive when he applies to universities; he feels a little overwhelmed and discouraged by all of his activities and would simply like to play Go with his grandfather; may cast a child actor or a young-looking adult.
