Sweeney: Baritone or Bari-Bass with low G flat to high G flat. A commanding presence on stage, and a dynamic singer with strength throughout his range. Sweeney is a dark character bent on revenge and ruthless when it comes to getting what he wants. He has a soft side when it comes to his long-lost wife and daughter and can confuse reality and revenge fantasy easily. 50’s

Mrs. Lovett: Mezzo-Soprano Alto or Mezzo - Belt or strong mix to E5, also strong low range & head voice, versatile character singer. Comedic actress with excellent timing. Mrs. Lovett is seemingly flighty, but has an agenda of her own. Driven by greed and love, she doesn’t hesitate to act deceitfully to get what she wants. 50’s

Anthony: Tenor or Bari-Tenor to F4. Low Ab. Beautiful voice. Young leading man, but a little rough around the edges. Anthony is sailor who stumbles into Sweeney’s dark world by chance, his life is changed forever when he falls head over heels for Johanna. 20’s

Johanna: Soprano – lyrical soprano with high B flat. (Also likely Soprano in Ensemble, high D#) Johanna is an innocent young woman who is held captive by her guardian, Judge Turpin. When she falls for Anthony, she grows brave enough to plot her escape. 20’s

Judge Turpin: Baritone/Bass – E2-F4. A sinister and powerful presence. The Judge revels in his power and demands people’s respect. He is tormented by his lust for Johanna and goes to great lengths to keep her captive. 50’s

Beggar Woman: Soprano/Mezzo Soprano – legit to F5, strong low range to low F#3. A character woman who has been living in desperate circumstances as a result of a tragedy that befell her many years ago. Now she has resorted to begging and prostitution to eat, she is a pariah in all society. This actor will also play ensemble roles. 50’s

Tobias: High Tenor to A flat4 Ab4. An innocent young man, should read in his teens. Tobias is an orphan who has been mistreated by everyone who has taken care of him. He’s been physically abused and is intellectually stunted to some degree. He has a big heart and an incredible capacity for loyalty.

Pirelli: Flamboyant, Operatic Tenor with strong Falsetto – to High C (C5). (Also a versatile Ensemble singer.) A character man with a facility for accents. An entrepreneur and an imposter. Pirelli is who he needs to be, changing identities whenever one ceases to be useful or becomes dangerous. This actor will also play Ensemble roles. 40’s

Fogg: Tenor. Vocal range flexible, probably Baritone or Bari-Bass. A character man who is a chameleon. Fogg is the overseer at the local asylum. He puts on a good face for visitors, but treats his patients with cruelty behind closed doors. This actor will also play Ensemble roles.
