BREAKDOWN

Seeking:

Dar
(early 20s) Male. Pakistani. Warm, likeable, and sweet, learning to become a man. Gentle by nature, but hardens over the course of the play. At first seems sympathetic to his captive Nick, but by the end he has transformed into a soldier. *Some facility with Punjabi a plus, but not required. *Will be asked to read sides with a Pakistani dialect.

Nick Bright
(early-late 30s) Male. Caucasian American. Intelligent, charming, highly educated, a wunderkind--has been successful at a young age. Resourceful: skilled at identifying and seizing opportunities. Has a confidence that stems from both his abilities and a life of entitlement. Doesn’t suffer fools. Has a young son, and that inspires him to survive. Older than Bashir, but not by much: acts as a mentor/educator to him.

Bashir
(late 20s-early 30s). Male. Pakistani, but grew up in the UK. Passionate about his ideals, opinionated, and a very quick learner. He is just as capable and whip-smart as Nick, but wasn't afforded the same kinds of opportunities. Has a chip on his shoulder, but sincerely wants to improve the lives of his people. Actor should truly invest in Bashir’s values and the source of his resentment, rather than play a stereotype. *Some facility with Punjabi a plus, but not required. *Will be asked to read with a working-class British accent.

Imam Saleem
(40s-50s) Male. Pakistani. Charismatic, dignified, charming and commanding. A natural leader. Walks into a room and effortlessly takes control. Truly wants to right the wrongs his people have suffered. We agree with many of the things he says. *Some facility with Punjabi a plus, but not required. *Will be asked to read sides with a Pakistani dialect.

Story line: SUMMARY: American investment banker Nick Bright will risk everything to return to his family. Held hostage in Pakistan by Islamic revolutionaries, his last chance for freedom depends on his ability to play the stock market to benefit his captors. This sharp geopolitical thriller from Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar takes us to the treacherous intersection of terrorism and capitalism, where greed and deceit prevail and no one escapes without blood on their hands.
