BREAKDOWN

Christopher
Boy, 11 or 12. Caucasian. Has recently lost his parents and finds himself in a challenging new situation with all the emotional complexity that comes with it. He wants to play the hero and can be aggressive, but under this there is real vulnerability. Actor needs to be believable in the 1940’s period. Basic singing ability.

Lily
Female 40’s or early 50’s. Caucasian. Lily runs a lighthouse in Maine, dialect is important. She is a salt-of-the earth type, used to doing manual labor, despite her clubbed foot. She’s a loner with a tough exterior, a bit of a curmudgeon with some formidable emotional barriers. Sings but wants to be a natural actor/singer voice, doesn’t need to be legit musical theater.

Yasuhiro
Asian Man, 40’s or early 50’s, ideally Japanese. Has authority and a certain charisma, while also the kind of personality that is content to work at an isolated lighthouse. Immigrant from Japan, dialect is important. Has something of a stoic personality, but with an underlying warmth and sensitivity to others. Not normally aggressive, but will fight when necessary. Sings but can be an actor/singer.

Doctor/Sheriff
40’s to 50’s. Caucasian. Small town sheriff. Gruff and has a sense of his own importance. Has authority, but not a total alpha male. Character is not particularly funny himself, but the actor should have a good sense of humor and find the comedy in the role. Has a solo song, needs to be a strong singer.

Male Ghost
20’s Male Ghost. Before he died he was a singer in a band in the 1920’s in Maine. He and the female ghosts do the majority of singing in the show. Need to be able to act through a song, sing a variety of styles but mainly pop/rock/indie. One of the two ghosts plays guitar.

Female Ghost
20’s female Ghost. Before she died she was a singer in a band in the 1920’s in Maine. She and the male ghosts do the majority of singing in the show. Need to be able to act through a song, sing a variety of styles but mainly pop/rock/indie. One of the two ghosts plays guitar.
