Job Details
Title Theatre Instructor/Workshop Coordinator
Category Other
Description This summer, the Institute for International Sport will be hosting the 2008 United States Scholar-Athlete Games, an event focused on broadening a student’s perspective using athletic and cultural programs while immersing them in an environment of international understanding. Athletes and artists from around the world spend eight days on the URI campus taking part in a program designed to facilitate a fusion of talent and instruction in their field of interest in addition to educating them about worldly issues through carefully planned theme days and keynote speakers.

The theatre program for the 2008 US Scholar-Athlete Games will cultivate basic voice and movement skills while learning about theater as a collaborative art form. Different genres of theater (from classical western and mask to activist and experimental) will be discussed and played with, and improvisation techniques will be introduced. Small performances will be created and rehearsed to be performed at the closing ceremonies utilizing the different talents and focuses the students have within theater.

The concept of the Scholar-Athlete Games is based on the mission of the Institute for International Sport that uses sport and the arts as mediums to foster peace and understanding, and to teach leadership skills. The Games strategically places scholar-athletes and scholar-artists on teams and in groups with students from other states and countries, thus requiring them to develop teamwork with a very diverse group of people. This interaction naturally leads to an exchange of ideas, and from shared experience comes a broader understanding of the issues that affect other people’s lives.

This year the US Scholar-Athlete Games will be held at the University of Rhode Island from June 28th to July 5th. Events for the games include: Baseball, Basketball, Chess, Golf, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Rugby, Soccer, Squash, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball, Art, Choir, Culinary Arts, Dance, Photography, Symphony, Theatre, and Writing/Poetry. Student-athletes and student-artists must be between the ages of 15-19, and must be honor roll students who are also proficient in their sport or art. This year we are especially excited to announce General Colin Powell, former Secretary of State, and Vint Cerf, known as the “father” of the Internet, as our keynote speakers for the event.
