Takes place in a small mining town in the African Congo. Present day. A war is raging, and everyone must find ways to survive.

Note: All characters but Mr. Harari are African.

Mama Nadi: African woman, 40s - early-50s. Attractive. Has an arrogant stride and a majestic air. Owner of a brothel; can make any visitor comfortable. Sexy, ironic, has a great sense of humor. Self-assured. Majestic, practical, intelligent and quick-witted. Uses the chaos of war to turn a profit. If things are bad, Mama eats first. Charismatic. No tolerance for sloppiness. Expert at diffusing volatile situations. Independent thinker, strong, proud, stubborn. Leading role.

Christian: African man, early – mid 40s. Salesman. Perpetually cheerful. His good looks are worn down by years of traveling. Caring uncle. Playful, optimistic, loyal, but also an alcoholic who is broken in some way. Could have had a successful academic career had the war not forced him to choose sides. Loves language and poetry. Compassionate, kind, haunted by violence. A pawn in the conflict.

Mr. Harari: Man, probably Lebanese, definitely of Arab descent. Mid 40s - 50s. Businessman. Deals in high-risk situations, always managing to negotiate in his own favor. Entertains himself with local girls at the brothel. In the Congo to make a profit. Even though he is exploitative, he is not without charm. Appealing, loyal to his family, a survivor.

Jerome Kisembe: African man, 35 - 45. Haughty rebel leader. Fearless. A sorcerer fashioned him a charm that makes him impervious to bullets. Knows the landscape better than anyone. Dangerous, precise with a weapon.

Commander Osembenga: African man, 35 - 45. Pompous soldier. Although accompanied by soldiers in uniform, he wears a gold chain and jogging suit. Dominant, headstrong, an important government man. Flirtatious, enjoys his power with men and women.

Josephine: African woman, late 20s - 30s. Sexy. Works for Mama Nadi. Shows contempt for women who might be her competition. Flirty, playful, brassy. Practical, uneducated. A survivor, a dirty dancer. Plans on escaping the brothel. Bossy and domineering. A little wicked. Unapologetically tells people the truth, hurtful or not. Very confident with her sexuality.

Salima: African woman, teens - 20s. Peasant; finds herself working in the brothel because of the war. Young, but worn. Rough hands due to digging. Young mother who has lost her child. Misses her family, who have disowned her. Hardheaded, can withstand great sorrow.

Sophie: African woman, 18 - 22. Striking, young. PERFORMER MUST SING. Prior to the conflict, a promising, intelligent university student. Has seen very bad times. A good girl, and a hard worker. Very pretty, keeps the miners’ eyes happy. Had her innocence taken by a bayonet. Bold enough to steal from Mama and is, in some way, the younger version of Mama Nadi.

Simon: African man, mid – late 20s. Farmer turned soldier. Family man who helps his cousin in his mission to find his wife. Kind, supportive, realistic. Compassionately tells loved ones the difficult truth.

Two Soldiers: African men, mid – late 20s. They serve in the conflict. Young, strong, virile. Performers must play an instrument: percussion or guitar.
