Description The Bacchae – Equity Principal Auditions

New York Shakespeare Festival/The Public Theater LORT B $728/week minimum.
Author: Euripides
Translation: Nicholas Rudall
Music: Philip Glass
Director: JoAnne Akalaitis

1st rehearsal: August 12, 2008. Runs September 16 - 28 at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park.

Seeking:

Casting Director’s note: “ALL ACTORS MUST HAVE STRONG COMMAND OF CLASSICAL TEXT.”

Dionysus: 20s-30s. God of wine. Son of Zeus and a mortal woman. A god in human form. Handsome, sexy and dangerous. Cunning. A revolutionary. Inspires women to leave their husbands, and ultimately drives them mad. A role for a charismatic actor with very strong language skills.

Pentheus: 20s-30s. Young warrior king of Thebes. Analytical, calculating and unyielding. A true conservative, he is morally rigid and easily outraged. Arrogant. Dresses like a woman to spy on The Bacchae in their ritual worship. A voyeur unwilling to follow Dionysus. A role for an actor with strong language skills.

Cadmus: 50s+. Grandfather of Pentheus, father of Agave and former king of Thebes. His power tempered by age, and without the arrogance of youth, he becomes loyal to Dionysus for fear that his family and kingdom will be destroyed.

Tiresias: 50s+. Theban prophet. Friend of Cadmus who also becomes caught up in the fervency of the worship of Dionysus. Trusting.

The following roles are cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements only.

Agave: CAST. Woman, 40s-50s. Mother of Pentheus. Has joined the revelries of Dionysus.
Cowherd: CAST. Man, 30s-40s.
Messenger: CAST. Man, 30s -40s.
The Chorus: CAST. Women, 20s-50s. Disciples of Dionysus. Energetic. Powerful. Full of life and spirit.
