Scenic Designer/properties Master
Timeframe: 6-week position: Monday, June 24-Tuesday, August 6
Salary: $3,000
Schedule: 9:00 am-5:00 pm, M-F, plus some weekend work
Job Description: The Scenic Designer/Properties Master (one position) is responsible for designing, and/or borrowing necessary scenery and properties for two productions as part of the Summer Stages performing arts workshop series. The two workshops include a 40-minute youth opera Babes in Toyland (for youth ages 7-12), and a full-length musical The Wiz (for youth ages 12 -18).We do not have an outfitted scene shop, as our program is new. Scenery will predominantly be painted, hinged flats, so a candidate’s strength should be in scenic painting/backdrop design, however, the candidate should be capable of building if necessary. Budgets for each production will be provided, but it would be helpful for a candidate to have some connections with college, professional scene shops, or similar from which some items could be borrowed. Each production has exactly two weeks between casting and performance. The scenic designer/properties master would also be responsible for teaching a few short workshops in scenic design/scenic painting for each program. Set-up and break-down of the scene shop area and strike of all productions are also a part of this position. This scenic designer/properties master reports to the Education Programs Manager, who is the director of the Summer Stages series.
Housing may be available for out-of-area candidates. Availability and logistics may be discussed during the interview process. Interested candidates should reference housing in their application.
Qualifications: Background designing and building sets and properties for the stage; experience working with kids in a theater-related capacity; flexibility and imagination; and an ability to work frugally and creatively with a modest budget to create spectacular sets and props. Should have a strong background in backdrop/flat painting.
