About the class:
A practical and gentle approach to theatrical dance for those of us who missed the whole ballet-lessons-since-age-three boat. Taught with warmth and humor by Donald Garverick, choreographer and co-creator of Show Choir! - The Musical.
Broadway Theater Dance is based on techniques taught by the American Dance Machine, a dance company that acted as a living museum, preserving choreography from Broadway shows. To ensure that their dancers were well-versed in many various styles of choreography, they developed this hour long warm-up. Class begins with 5-10 minutes of yoga and stretching, to loosen the body. This is followed by 15-20 minutes of body isolations, borrowing movements from all over the world. The warm-up concludes with 30 minutes of barre work to emphasize proper technique and strengthen the body. The last half hour of class is focused on learning a short combination of choreography, which can range from simple peasant dances to modern jazz or original choreography by the greats such as Jerome Robbins, Michael Bennett and Bob Fosse. This is an beginner level class making it a great class both for intermediate dancers wishing to broaden their vocabulary and actors/singers who move well who wish to build on their technique and learn how to "make it through" a dance audition.
About the teacher:
Donald Garverick began his dance training when he was in his teens under the guidance of Broadway choreographer, Robert Tucker (Shenandoah) who taught him the American Dance Machine technique (ADM). Since 1996, Donald has performed in many regional, summer stock, national tour, and Off-Broadway productions. Early in his performing career, he was asked to join the other side of the creative team by becoming an assistant choreographer and dance captain. After assisting on numerous projects, including Off-Broadway's Area 51 - The Musical and NYMF 2012's Foreverman, he now choreographs on his own. Recent directing/choreography credits include the 2010 NYMF production of Show Choir! - The Musical (www.showchoirthemusical.com - which Donald co-wrote as well,) Before God Was Invented: A Prehistoric Pagan Parable at Theatre for the New City, and the current Off-Broadway run of Siren's Heart: The Marilyn Monroe Musical at The Actor's Temple.
