A woman, mother of the earth, in her mid fifties. Housekeeper to Chilford; has converted on the surface, but still holds to her tribal faith.
JEKESAI/ESTER
A girl in her late teens. Converts to Christianity to escape a forced marriage in her native village.
CHILFORD
A man in his early to mid thirties. A catechist in the Catholic Church, the only African who holds this position in the Mashonaland region; also occasional assistant to the British Commissioner of Native Areas.
TAMBA
A man in his early to mid twenties. Jekesai’s cousin.
CHANCELLOR
A man in his early to mid thirties. Another member of the Catholic Church; serves as interpreter for white mine owners. A bit of a scoundrel, he is an African opportunist.
UNCLE
A man in his forties or fifties. Jekesai’s uncle.
PRUDENCE
A woman in her early thirties. Engaged to be married to Chancellor.
