Lowry Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (LAVPA) teaches and produces outstanding artists from the Hampton Roads area in performances and community programs which promote excellence, innovation, diversity, education, and community involvement, with the fundamental belief that the arts are vital to our society locally, nationally, and internationally.
LAVPA, in our first year of arts education is seeking to prove our uses of dance as a vehicle for developing self-esteem, creative expression, and critical thinking skills among 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students (aged 10 - 14).
The Dance Instructor of LAVPA will impart basic to advanced understanding of ballet techniques including placement, posture, carriage, alignment, strength, flexibility and style of arms, legs and torso, as well as stretches, plies, leaps, turns and combinations. Other areas of expertise should include choreography, modern dance (such as contemporary/lyrical) and jazz.

•Five day work week - Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

•Participate and oversee students as directed on field trips.

•Participate in individual and LAVPA staff meetings

•Plan lessons that will provide LAVPA students with an appreciation of the physical and mental discipline necessary to properly execute techniques, mood expression, how to tell a story through dance, the importance of line, and how to portray ease and grace despite the high level of difficulty involved

•Provide schedule of proposed class content to Artistic Director.

•Coordinate with Artistic Director to assess students’ individual needs.

•Produce student progress evaluations at the end of each term.

•Choreograph the dancers’ presentation for performance(s).

•Overseeing auditions for students being admitted into the dance department.

•Oversee each intern within the dance department.

Qualifications
• Requires prior experience as a professional dancer or teacher of at least 3 years.

• Excellent leadership skills including an ability to command respect and motivate achievement while working effectively with young people.

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to relate well to diverse persons, and work as a team.

• Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines in a self-directed, prioritized and calm manner.

• Flexibility to meet changing needs and priorities as they occur.

• Ability to choreography several dance pieces through-out the year.

• Must be able to successfully pass a background check.
