THE AMERICAN PLACE THEATRE/YOUNG AUDIENCES NY:
Now in its 51st Season (2012-13), the Theatre is led by Artistic Director/Co-Founder Wynn Handman, The American place Theatre was founding in 1963 by Wynn Handman, Sidney Lanier and Michael Tolan at St. Clement's Church, far west on 46th Street in Manhattan and was incorporated as a not-for-profit theatre in that year. The first full production was Robert Lowell's theatre trilogy masterpiece, the old Glory, in November 1964.

The Theatre, having received over 30 Obies and 16 Audelcos, is critically acclaimed as a birthing place for artistic endeavors at the crossroad of literature and live performance. The full focus of the Theatre's artistic activity is now with LITERATURE TO LIFE, a performance based literacy program which present professionally staged verbatim adaptations of significant American literary works. This educational program gives students a new form of access to literature by bringing to life the world of books with performances that create an atmosphere of discovery and spare the imagination. Literature to Life encourages reading, writing, and critical thinking and has already provided a catalyst for learning and self-expression for over 450,000 students nation-wide.

In 2012, The American Place Theatre formed a strategic Alliance with Young Audiences NY, which strives to bring high quality arts education to NYC schools across multiple arts disciplines.
