Program Director

The 52nd Street Project, a global leader in children's theater and community-based arts programs, seeks a highly motivated individual to be Program Director, a part-time position (hours generally from 1-6). This person should have experience as a performing artist and should also be a flexible, compassionate, and organized individual with experience working with, and ideally teaching, youth ages 10-18.

The 52nd Street Project is committed to diversity at all levels: on our stage, in our audience, on our staff, and within our leadership. We strongly encourage candidates of color to apply. Duties include:

Administration and Producing: The Program Director will be responsible for supervising all New Platforms programs, for children aged 10-18 years old, and refining curriculum for these programs as well. The programs involve various art forms within and beyond theater (poetry and spoken word, theater design, stage combat, photography, dance, and filmmaking). Out-of-class dramaturgical meetings and rehearsals are common. All programs end in some kind of presentation or performance. The Program Director is responsible for the full scope of each program, with guidance and support from the rest of the artistic and programming staff, and will support volunteer teaching artists in the fulfillment of the curriculum.

Teaching: The Program Director will facilitate and participate in the creative process of each program, and that participation will, of course, be influenced by the Program Director’s expertise and experience.

Productions: The Project mounts seven theater program productions per year, as well as five to six New Platform productions and exhibits. All artistic staff members should be ready to attend all load-ins, technical and dress rehearsals, performances, and strikes where appropriate.

Volunteers: Identification, recruitment and supervision of adult volunteers, most of whom are NYC arts professionals who will aid in the refinement and facilitation of the New Platforms programs.

This job includes a close partnership with the Artistic Director, Associate Artistic Director, and Director of Education. Duties such as matching up kid/adult pairs for each New Platforms program, observing and participating in workshops and rehearsals, providing guidance and direction to all participants, and supervising and supporting the kids in their work, will be shared with other artistic staff. The ideal person for this position would thrive in a collaborative environment.

The job offers many rewards, including the chance to work with a 33-year-old, extremely successful non-profit community based arts organization, becoming part of a gifted and intimate community of artists and educators, and serving the wonderful and vibrant – but underserved – youth of Hell’s Kitchen. We estimate that the PD will work 25 hours per week.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
