Drew Gasparini is back to mentor this series!
THE COMPOSER SERIES FOR ACTORS!
This class is designed for the musical theatre actor. Class will meet over the course of four weeks. The class will first meet with Drew to sing and do slight adjustments on their "go-to" material. They will then discuss options to sing for Benj, Justin, and Tom. Drew will aid students and offer suggestions in picking a song from the composers' repertoire that shows them best!
Students will bring in cuts from the composers' repertoire and work one-on-one with Benj, Justin, and Tom!

Are the Tony-nominated songwriters of the Broadway musical A Christmas Story. In addition to the Best Score nomination, A Christmas Story also received Tony nominations for Best Musical and Best Book. The holiday musical was named one of the Top 10 Shows of 2012 by Time Magazine, shared recognition as the #1 Musical of 2012 in USA Today and received Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations for Outstanding New Broadway Musical. Benj and Justin’s score for the show also received a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Music.Benj & Justin are also the composers behind the Off-Broadway musical Dogfight, a Best New Musical nominee for the Drama League, Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle awards. Benj and Justin also received an Outer Critics Circle Best Score nomination for their work on the show. They are also the composersfor the popular song cycle Edges. As television songwriters, their original songs were featured on Season 2 of NBC’s Smash, and have risen to the Top 25 on the iTunes Pop Charts.
Tom was nominated for the 2014 Tony Award and the Outer Critics Award for his work on the current Broadway musicalIf/Then. Tom received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as two Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Orchestrations for Next to Normal. In addition, his work on Next to Normal received the Frederick Loewe Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best New Score. Tom is responsible for the music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations for Green Day's American Idiot on Broadway, and provided additional arrangements for their studio albums, 21st Century Breakdown and¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré! As a composer, credits include the Broadway shows, High Fidelity and Bring It On: The Musical; The Winter's Tale and All's Well That Ends Well (The Public's NYSF). Tom has composed songs for Sesame Street and he co-wrote with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bigger, which opened the 2013 Tony Awards. As an arranger, conductor, and musical director, other credits include Pitch Perfect,Everyday Rapture, 13, Laugh Whore, and Debbie Does Dallas.
Drew Gasparini is an award winning musical theatre composer/lyricist and a performing singer/songwriter. Winner of the 2006 John Lennon Songwriter’s award, he has shared the stage with such acts as Jason Mraz, Third Eye Blind, and The Plain White T’s. He has written the music and lyrics for his musicals Crazy, Just Like Me (winner of “Best Of Fest” and runner up for “Best Book” in the New York Musical Theatre Festival 2011), Make Me Bad (PACE new musicals; book by Alex Brightman), Turn Of The Screw (commission by Fordham University, 2012 workshop at Lincoln Center; book by Michael Kimmel), and #UntitledPopMusical (book by Michael Kimmel), to name a few.
Drew was a contributing composer to the television series SMASH (season 2) on NBC- he was also seen and heard on Oxygen’s The Next Big Thing for which he also wrote music. Drew was named one of Playbill’s “Contemporary Musical Theatre Songwriter’s You Should Know”.
All classes are held from 7pm-10pm.
Thursday, September 4th- Getting to Know You/Preparing for Benj, Justin, & Tom
Students will work with Drew on picking a song appropriate for the upcoming guest artists. Students will most likely work on material from the composer's repertoire or something similar to their style.
Thursday, September 11th (Pasek and Paul)
Each student will work one-on-one with the composers on the student's song of choice. Each student will have roughly 10-12 minutes.
Thursday, September 18th (Tom Kitt)
Each student will work one-on-one with the composer on the student's song of choice. Each student will have roughly 10-12 minutes.
Thursday, September 25th - Masterclass - New Works (Drew Gasparini)
After the last guest artist, Drew will assign the students something from his own rep. If there is nothing that suits the student, Drew will assign them a song from another up and coming composer.
Class Cap: 13-15 students
Rate: $380 (As this is a highly anticipated class, we are unable to offer a discount to returning students, however we will give returning students first priority in enrollment)
