Theater Administration Intern, Development Intern


The New Group, one of New York’s leading off-Broadway theaters, is seeking FALL INTERNS. The New Group is an award-winning, artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater. In addition to producing three main stage productions each season, the organization’s New Group/New Works play development program works intensively with emerging playwrights, presenting a free monthly reading series and up to three workshops annually. The New Group also runs a theater education program providing free programming for students in New York City public schools. The New Group will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary in its 2014-2015 season.
The New Group is a small but mighty team looking for progressive candidates pursuing a career in arts administration and/or non-profit theater. At The New Group, like the artists on our stage, our staff is an ensemble working towards a common purpose. Ideal candidates should be attentive, organized, eager to learn the inner workings of a small company, and passionate about contemporary theater.

THEATER ADMINISTRATION INTERNS learn alongside individual department heads and participate in day-to-day operations and on-going projects. Interns provide general office support and will take staff meeting minutes; facilitate and organize in-house readings; attend and observe production meetings. For the Education department, the intern will offer administrative assistance to the teaching artists; communicate with students, and help produce the final performance. Support to the business management staff includes data entry and assistance with financial administration. This is a full time position. A minimum of 35 hours per week is required for 3 months minimum.

DEVELOPMENT INTERNS learn from the Director of Development and Development Manager. Interns research individual funding and foundation opportunities and help maintain donor databases. Each intern has the opportunity to be involved in strategy meetings, event planning and staff meetings. Interns will also assist with office administrative tasks and help coordinate New Group events and season planning. This is for self-motivated individuals who are interested in learning about non-profit theater and the creative thinking that goes into fundraising. A minimum of 15 hours per week is expected for 3 months minimum. Both part-time and full-time applicants will be considered.

New Group interns receive opportunities to attend brown bag lunches with New Group artists, view invite-only developmental readings, observe tech and dress rehearsals, and receive a free ticket to each show in our current season! You will also receive mentorship throughout your internship to make contacts to help further your professional development. We encourage and accommodate interns seeking school credit, however, those arrangements are the responsibility of the intern.
Full time interns will receive a monthly Metrocard. Part time interns will receive a Metrocard equivalent to travel costs.
