Technical Director/Master Carpenter


The Atlantic Acting School is seeking a full time seasonal Technical Director/Master Carpenter for 9 weeks. Starting September 22nd, ending December 7th. There will be a week unpaid vacation for Thanksgiving.

You will be working directly under the Stage 2 Production Manager, to build 5 student shows, produced back to back. 1 week of build, 4 days of tech for each. It is a festival-type schedule, and hours will be long on many days, but during performances days are much lighter. Often, you will be working alone on scenery, so a good dose of self starting is imperative.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Drafting build drawings in Vectorworks

Driving the trucks for scenery/prop pickups

Working with designers to create and execute building plans for scenery

Sourcing and purchasing materials

Building all scenery for student productions

Maintaining a high level of safety in the studios and work areas

Collaborating with other members of the production department and helping in all areas to ensure successful productions

Occasionally working as a technician to aid the Master Electrician and Prop Master as needed

Managing budgets and helping the Production Manager find solutions for designers to stay within budget

Working on multiple shows at once (up to 6 shows may be running concurrently)

Creating and managing multiple build and strike schedules

Hiring and supervising overhire labor as needed

Supervising Techs, Dresses, and Performances

Maintaining a clean and organized scene shop

Keeping performance spaces in good working condition at all times


Drivers License - ability to drive 20’ trucks in the city safely.

CAD Drafting – We use Vectorworks, but if you prefer AutoCAD and can bring your own license, that is also acceptable.

2+ years of scenic carpentry experience, 2+ years of experience in technical theatrical production, basic theatrical sound and lighting knowledge, basic computer skills (Excel, Outlook, etc), organization, efficiency, communication, punctuality, troubleshooting, ability to work as part of a team, leadership, ability to work long hours (often late nights and weekends), ability to stay focused in high stress situations, sense of humor
