Highlights From My Fair Lady at Shaw Festival 2011
The 50th season of Canada's Shaw Festival features a "loverly" revival of the Lerner and Loewe musical My Fair Lady, based on Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion. Directed by Arena Stage's artistic director Molly Smith, the classic tells the tale of phonetics professor Henry Higgins (Benedict Campbell) and colleague Colonel Pickering (Patrick Galligan), who make a bet that a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle (Deborah Hay), can learn proper English and be passed off as a lady — even fooling her dustman father, Alfred (Neil Barclay). The score includes "The Rain in Spain," "I Could Have Danced All Night" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face." In repertory through Oct. 30 Shaw's Festival Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
