Michael Greif and the Evolution of Rent

Michael Greif, the director of the original Off-Broadway/Broadway production of Rent in 1996, talks about the steps he took to make his current Off-Broadway revival of the rock musical clear and relevant to a 21st-century audience. He talked history with his young cast, making sure they knew what was happening in New York in the late '80s and early '90s — in the first decade of the age of AIDS — when the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is set. He also introduced his troupe to the family of late Rent composer-lyricist-librettist Jonathan Larson. To see interviews with the cast of Rent, click here.
