New Broadway Streetcar Takes Route Through a Multi-Racial New Orleans
Director Emily Mann (Broadway's Having Our Say, Anna in the
Tropics) had a
lifelong ambition to direct A Streetcar Named Desire. Blair
Underwood
always considered Stanley Kowalski one of the three foremost
characters in
American theatre. With Nicole Ari Parker (Blanche DuBois), Wood Harris
(Mitch) and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Stella) accompanying Underwood's Stanley,
Tennessee Williams' drama about faded beauty, romantic delusion and
violent urges is
re-imagined for Broadway in a multi-racial landscape. With an eye
toward bringing out black
New Orleans, Mann and company are confident the casting will mesh
"perfectly"
with Williams' themes of survival, endurance and ambition. For more on
