Highlights From The Nutty Professor, With Music by Marvin Hamlisch, in Nashville
Jerry Lewis directs the Broadway-aimed world premiere of The Nutty Professor, a new musical based on his film comedy, now to Aug. 19 at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville, TN. Michael Andrew stars as Julius Kelp, the social-misfit egghead who concocts a potion that transforms him into crooner Buddy Love. With book and lyrics by Tony winner Rupert Holmes and music by the late Tony winner Marvin Hamlisch, who died unexpectedly on Aug. 6, the show revels in a jazzy pre-Beatles sound. Mark Jacoby (a Tony nominee for Hal Prince's Show Boat) and Marissa McGowan (Bonnie & Clyde, A Little Night Music) also star. For a Playbill Brief Encounter with lyricist Rupert Holmes, click here.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
