Highlights From The Public Theater's Into the Woods, Part 1
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning musical Into the Woods intertwines classic fairytales including Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel and Jack and the Beanstalk, to tell stories of wishes granted and the costs that go along with them. The production, staged on a tree-covered set that rises over 50 feet in the air, stars Donna Murphy, Denis O'Hare, Jessie Mueller and Amy Adams and is directed by Timothy Sheader and Liam Steel in a new incarnation of their 2010 Regent's Park Open Air Theatre London staging. Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
