Highlights From World-Premiere Musical Hero at Chicago's Marriott Theatre
Aaron Thielen and Michael Mahler's world-premiere musical Hero takes the stage at Chicago's Marriott Theatre through Aug. 19. Directed by David H. Bell, the Broadway-style, rock-and-rap-scored production is the story of Hero Batowski (An American Daughter's Erich Bergen ), a comic-book artist working at the family comic shop and still blaming himself for the tragic death of his mother. With the help of his cousin Kirk (Alex Goodrich) and father (Don Forsten), Hero takes steps to reenter the world after bumping into former high school flame Jane (Heidi Kettenring). Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
