In Broadway's Hairspray, Duff Will Play Amber; DeGarmo Will Return Come Fall

By Kenneth Jones
14 Jun 2006

Hollywood's Haylie Duff will make her Broadway debut playing Amber Von Tussle the musical Hairspray starting July 18 at the Neil Simon Theatre.

Duff has been acting professionally since the age 12, getting her start in the 1997 miniseries "True Women." Her small screen credits include recurring roles on "Boston Public," "Lizzie McGuire," "Joan of Arcadia" and "7th Heaven." She appeared in the film "Napoleon Dynamite." A singer/songwriter, she wrote songs for sister Hillary Duff's albums, and the two have also performed together. This summer she will be seen opposite her sister in the movie "Material Girls."

Isabel Keating (who was Tony Award nominated for playing Judy Garland in The Boy From Oz) joined the company as Velma Von Tussle on June 6. Lisa Jolley will step into the roles of Prudy Pingleton, Gym Teacher, and Matron on July 4. She replaces Julie Halston who was with Hairspray for almost two years. Halston is leaving the show to co-star in the new CBS sitcom "The Class."

Hairspray tour star Aaron Tveit will begin Broadway performances as Link Larkin on July 18, the same day as his love interest, Amber Von Tussle (Haylie Duff).

Recently, the musical also welcomed a new Edna Turnblad, Blake Hammond, and a new Penny Pingleton, Caissie Levy.

Earlier this spring Hairspray hosted "American Idol" runner-up Diana DeGarmo as Penny Pingleton. DeGarmo will rejoin the company on Sept. 8. Still appearing is R& B singer Tevin Campbell, who plays Seaweed Stubbs.

Hairspray currently stars Shannon Durig as Tracy Turnblad, Stephen DeRosa as Wilbur Turnblad, Andrew Rannells as Link Larkin, Becky Gulsvig as Amber Von Tussle, Darlene Love as Motormouth Maybelle and Leah Hocking as Velma Von Tussle.

The musical comedy based on the film by John Waters has a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, and songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Hairspray currently plays Tuesday and Thursday at 7 PM; Friday and Saturday at 8 PM; Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM; Sunday at 1:30 PM and 6:30 PM, at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre, 250 West 52 Street.

Beginning June 27, Hairspray will introduce a new performance schedule, playing Tuesday and Thursday at 7 PM; Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 8 PM; Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM; Sunday at 3 PM.

For the Fourth of July week, ending July 9, the show will play Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 8 PM; Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM; Thursday at 7 PM; Sunday at 3 PM.
