Two-time Tony Award nominee Christine Andreas will play Margaret in the national tour of The Light in the Piazza, Playbill.com has learned.

The soprano known for her Broadway turns, solo recordings and cabaret and concert performances, will play the entire 2006-07 tour, beginning Aug. 1-27 at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco. The tech will be in remote Boise, ID.

Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and Toronto are among cities on the tour schedule.

Andreas was Tony Award-nominated for playing Laurey in 1980's Oklahoma! and Frankie in the 1983 revival of On Your Toes. She also played Eliza in the 1976 revival of My Fair Lady opposite Ian Richardson, and starred in The Scarlet Pimpernel on Broadway. Her recordings include "Here's to the Ladies" on the PS Classics label, and "The Carlyle Set" on the Fynsworth Alley label, as well as cast recordings of her Broadway turns.

The Tony Award-winning musical, The Light in the Piazza, ends its Broadway run at Lincoln Center Theater's Vivian Beaumont Theater July 2. A national audience saw the current cast in a June 15 "Live From Lincoln Center" broadcast on PBS.

The lush, romantic, soulful musical has a book by Craig Lucas, based on the novella by Elizabeth Spencer, and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel (he won the 2005 Tony for Best Score and shared the Best Orchestrations Tony). Bartlett Sher directs, and the original design team will re-imagine the scenic elements for proscenium houses on the tour (the Beaumont is a modified thrust space with acres of depth, a luxury rare on the road).

Full casting for the tour has not been officially announced, but some members of the current company are expected to appear in the national tour.

The musical tells the 1950s-set story of a North Carolina mother, Margaret, on holiday in Italy with her sensitive daughter, Clara. Margaret searches her heart when Clara falls in love with an Italian boy, Fabrizio, in Florence. Themes of parental responsibility, letting go, holding on, the nature of marital love and the joy of true love percolate like espresso in the rarefied romantic musical.
