Persephone, Drama Desk-Nominated Musical About F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gets NYC Concert

By Kenneth Jones
23 Jun 2006

The Pursuit of Persephone, the 2006 Drama Desk Award-nominated musical inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald's "This Side of Paradise," returns for a concert performance June 26.

The original musical — not a strict re-telling of "This Side of Paradise," but based on the young life of F. Scott Fitzgerald and the time of his debut novel — has music and lyrics by Peter Mills, book by Mills and Cara Reichel, and is directed by Cara Reichel.

The Prospect Theater Company concert presentation plays 7:30 PM June 26 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, 121 Christopher Street.

The Pursuit of Persephone will feature much of its original 2005 Off-Broadway cast, including Chris Fuller as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jessica Grové as Ginevra King, David Abeles as Edmund Wilson, Piper Goodeve as Marie Hersey and Benjamin Sands as J. P. Bishop.

The concert will benefit the Prospect Theater Company's 2005-06 season of all new musicals, "and celebrate The Pursuit of Persephone's Drama Desk nominations for Best Music (Peter Mills) and Best Orchestrations (Daniel Feyer, Peter Mills).

"Brilliantly talented, young F. Scott Fitzgerald is swept into the hierarchy of Ivy League society and the antics of the Princeton Triangle Club, in pursuit of the beautiful and elusive debutante Ginevra King," according to Prospect. "Their romance inspired one of the greatest novels of the 20th century."

Prospect's resident composer Peter Mills and artistic director Cara Reichel have collaborated on Illyria, The Flood, The Alchemists, The Taxi Cabaret and the recent well-reviewed musical comedy, Iron Curtain.

Tickets can be purchased by calling Ticket Central at (212) 279-4200, by visiting www.ticketcentral.org, or in person at the Lucille Lortel Theatre box office.

Tickets range includes: Prime Seating for Show, VIP Post-Show Reception: $100 each; Orchestra Seating for Show, VIP Post-Show Reception: $60 each; Balcony Seating for Show: $30 each.
