Grinch to Play Holiday Engagement at Hilton Theatre

By Andrew Gans
27 Jun 2006

Although the new dance musical Hot Feet has yet to announce a closing date at the Hilton Theatre, a holiday engagement of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! — The Musical has been booked into the theatre.

Variety reports that previews for Grinch will begin Oct. 25 with an official opening on Nov. 8. The limited engagement will play through Jan. 7, 2007. Grinch, which debuted in 1998 at the Old Globe Theatre, was originally directed by Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien and played annually at the San Diego venue. Matt August will stage the Broadway run with choreography by John DeLuca.

Grinch will offer 12 performances a week. The industry paper says a special agreement was made with the unions for this non-traditional schedule. Broadway shows play, at most, eight performances a week. Grinch will perform eight shows on weekends alone.

Grinch features book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin. Two tunes from the 1966 "Grinch" film will be heard in the Broadway run: "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" and "Welcome Christmas." No casting has been announced.

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! — The Musical is being produced by Running Subway Prods. The company has previously produced Sinatra at the London Palladium (in the West End) and Cathy Rigby Is Peter Pan (at Madison Square Garden).
