Groff Pulls Old Orange Lemon Egg Canary Trick at P.S. 122 Beginning July 12

By Robert Simonson
12 Jul 2006

Orange Lemon Egg Canary, a work by Ruby Sunrise playwright Rinne Groff, will have a New York run at P.S. 122 July 12-30.

Michael Sexton, who had a success at P.S. 122 with Groff's Jimmy Carter Was a Democrat, will direct the work. Starring are actor-magician Steve Cuiffo as Great, Aubrey Dollar as Trilby, Emily Swallow as Henrietta and Laura Kai Chen as Egypt.

The play, which features actual magic, provides a quirky look at a small time magician named Great, who's skilled at illusion, but not so adept at relationships. Nonetheless, he exerts a magnetic pull on two woman, one his former assistant, the other his current helper. Love, secrets and illusion, as well as the trick behind a famous act called The Hypnotic Balance, are among the pervading themes in the tale.

The title refers to a signature trick in which a canary in enclosed within the three other listed items.

The play had its world premiere at the 2003 Humana Festival in Louisville.

Groff enjoyed the New York premieres of her plays The Ruby Sunrise and What Then within the past 12 months. Her other plays include Inky.
