Leo Ash Evens, who played Tulsa for the Bay Area Houston Ballet’s production of Gypsy — which starred Andrea McArdle — will reprise that role for the Ravinia Festival’s upcoming production of the classic musical.

The actor told Playbill.com that he will be part of the Ravinia production, which stars Tony and Olivier Award winner Patti LuPone as the stage mother of all stage mothers Momma Rose. As previously announced, Ravinia’s Gypsy will also feature Jack Willis as Herbie and In My Life’s Jessica Boevers in the title role.

The actors will join the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for three performances of the Stephen Sondheim-Jule Styne-Arthur Laurents musical Aug. 11-13. Lonny Price will direct the production, and Paul Gemignani will conduct the famed orchestra.

Gypsy features a score by Jule Styne (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) and a book by Arthur Laurents. The musical bowed on Broadway in May 1959 at the Broadway Theatre, playing 702 performances before closing at the Imperial Theatre, where it later transferred, on March 25, 1961.

Leo Ash Evens graduated with a BFA in Drama from Carnegie Mellon University. He played Mike in the tour of Disney’s On the Record and Hollinger in the tour of Casper the Musical. He was seen in the revue I Prefer to Dream at the Triad and in the 45th Street Theatre productions of Good News and Lady, Be Good! His numerous regional theatre credits include mountings of Oklahoma!, 42nd Street, West Side Story, Chicago, The Secret Garden, Big River, Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair. Evens also took part in readings of Harmony, But I’m a Cheerleader!, Easter Rising, Rainy Day People and The Adventures of Gilda. Visit www.leoashevens.com for more information.

Gypsy tickets can be reserved by calling (847) 266-5100 or by visiting www.ravinia.org.
