Seven Brides Starts Previews at London’s Theatre Royal, Haymarket, Aug. 10

The U.K. touring production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers dances its way into the West End’s Theatre Royal, Haymarket Aug. 10. The stage version of the 1954 MGM musical officially opens Aug. 16.
The cast is led by Dave Willets who plays Adam, the eldest of the eponymous siblings. Willets was last seen in the West End in Ragtime and before that as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables and in the title role in The Phantom of the Opera.
Shona Lindsay (Grease in the West End and Singin’ in the Rain on tour) takes on the role of Adam’s bride Milly.
Set in Oregon in 1850, Gene de Paul (music) and Johnny Mercer’s (lyrics) musical is a battle of the sexes tale that makes Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew look positively liberal by comparison.
Adam (played by Howard Keel in the movie) sets out to the nearest town to find a wife and takes Milly back to his cabin where she discovers that her husband lives with six brothers, each of whom is anxious to get a wife of his own.
After reading about the Roman capture of the Sabine women, Adam finds the perfect solution to his brothers’ bachelor status – to kidnap six women.
The show’s famous score – which includes additional songs by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn – includes the songs "Bless Your Beautiful Hide," "Wonderful, Wonderful Day," "Goin’ Courtin’" and "We Gotta Make It Through The Winter."
Maurice Lane’s production, with choreography by Adrian Allsopp, arrives in the West End after a nine-month national tour.
