Patty Griffin's Roadtrip Musical, With Bunin and Mayer, Will Park at Atlantic Theater in 2007

The untitled new musical by folk-rock songwriter Patty Griffin and librettist Keith Bunin will surface at Atlantic Theater Company in 2006-07.
The work has been in development recently under the direction of Michael Mayer, who will stage the full production at Atlantic, where Mayer's production of Spring Awakening was a sensation this spring.
The new Griffin-Bunin work will come to Atlantic in spring 2007 in association with producer Tom Hulce (who was also attached to Spring Awakening).
Sutton Foster has been attached to the project in the past. The new show will be the second world premiere musical in the history of the Atlantic, which is known for contemporary plays. Atlantic Theater Company was founded by David Mamet
and William H. Macy.
Atlantic's world premiere production of the acclaimed musical Spring Awakening, featuring music by Duncan Sheik, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and direction by Michael Mayer, concluded its extended engagement on Aug. 5, 2006 and will move to Broadway in the coming months.
The new Mayer show's music and lyrics are by Grammy Award-nominated recording artist Patty Griffin ("Impossible Dream"). Keith Bunin penned the play, The Credeaux Canvas, directed by Mayer, The Busy World Is Hushed and The World Over.
Previews will begin May 9, 2007, toward a June opening.
"The Patty Griffin musical tells the story of Duane and Molly's road trip in a beat-up old Chevy pick-up truck from the southern tip of Florida to the Northwest corner of New York, with many detours along the way," according to Atlantic. "The world premiere of the new musical follows the pursuit of love and family, and the geography of the American dream in our time."
Official title, opening date, casting and design team to be announced shortly.
Griffin's albums include "Living With Ghosts," "Flaming Red," "1000 Kisses" and "Impossible Dream."
Mayer is a Tony Award nominee whose projects include Thoroughly Modern Millie, After the Fall and Side Man.
