NBC's "Scrubs" to Feature Musical Episode with Songs by Q Composers

By Andrew Gans
17 Aug 2006

The Tony Award-winning composers of Avenue Q will pen new songs for an upcoming musical episode of the NBC series "Scrubs."

Debra Fordham, a supervising producer for the television series, told Playbill.com that Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx will write several songs for a musical episode of the series that she is currently writing. "The general plot," said Fordham, "is that a woman comes into Sacred Heart, our hospital, complaining that she constantly hears music, yet all her tests come back normal. Is she just crazy? Or is something else going on?"

The Q duo will write "the big opening number, the act break and the finale. The fourth one is a song about a stool sample!" The episode is scheduled to film in October and should air some time in spring 2007.

"Scrubs," according to the show's official website, "focuses on the strange experiences of J.D., a medical resident, as he continues on his healing career in a surreal hospital crammed full of unpredictable staffers and patients — where humor and tragedy can merge paths at any time." Zach Braff portrays Dr. John "J.D." Dorian, and the cast also features Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, Neil Flynn, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes. Bill Lawrence is the executive producer of the Emmy-nominated series; Will McKenzie will direct the musical episode.

Lopez and Marx met at the BMI Workshop in 1998. Prior to writing the Tony-winning Avenue Q, they collaborated on Kermit, Prince of Denmark and Theatreworks/USA's Reading Rainbow and Ferdinand the Bull. The young composers/lyricists are currently at work on a musical comedy film for Universal Pictures as well as a stage musical with "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. A few of their songs were also recently featured in If You Give a Mouse a Cookie & Other Story Books.
