"Fantasia Barrino Story" — with Barrino, Devine and Davis — Makes TV Premiere Aug. 19

By Andrew Gans
19 Aug 2006

A new made-for-television film concerning the life of “American Idol” Fantasia Barrino makes its Lifetime Network debut Aug. 19 at 9 PM ET.

Directed by stage and screen veteran Debbie Allen, "The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale" is based on the autobiography penned by Barrino, who won the top prize during the third season of the hit FOX-TV series "American Idol."

Barrino plays herself in the television film. Her co-stars include Tony Award winner Viola Davis (King Hedley II, Seven Guitars), original Dreamgirls star Loretta Devine, Kadeem Hardison and Jamia Simone Nash.

The film, which also features Barrino’s singing, focuses on how the young artist and single mother was able to overcome "poverty, sexual abuse and illiteracy." Encore broadcasts are scheduled for Aug. 20 and 21; check local listings.
