Dinner with Foa or Rapp, a Meeting with Maroulis and a Chance to Conduct Phantom Are All Part of the BC/EFA Flea Market

By Andrew Gans
07 Sep 2006

Over a dozen one-of-a-kind theatrical experiences will be part of the Live Auction at the 20th Annual Broadway Flea Market and Grand Auction, which will be held Sept. 24 in Shubert Alley.

The outdoor fundraiser, which raises money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, features a host of theatrical memorabilia donated by the theatrical community. The Live Auction is scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM, although bids may be placed by phone or by visiting the Broadway Cares website. On-line and phone bids will close Sept. 23 at 4 PM.

Just a few of the current offerings for the Live Auction — more will be added as the day of the Flea Market nears — include "A Night in Rent . . . for You and 12 Friends" (an on-stage appearance in Rent, a Rent cast jacket, 12 VIP house seats to the show); "Meet Actor and Author Anthony Rapp" (an autographed copy of Rapp's "Without You: A Memoir of Love, Loss and the Musical Rent; dinner with the actor at a neighborhood restaurant); "F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!!!" (two tickets to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee plus dinner following the performance with Bee co-star Barrett Foa); "Conduct the Music of the Night" (stand at the Phantom conductor's podium and conduct the exit music, sit with the orchestra for the entire show plus two house seats to the long-running musical); "Fame Becomes You" (an onstage appearance during the Jiminy Glick segment of Fame Becomes Me, a pair of tickets to the show and a backstage visit with Martin Short); and "Meet the Wedding Singer's Fiancee and an American Idol" (two tickets to The Wedding Singer, backstage tour with Felicia Finley, a meeting with Constantine Maroulis).

A silent auction will feature such items as a Sweeney Todd poster signed by the entire revival cast; a Beauty and the Beast musical phrase handwritten and signed by composer Alan Menken; an autographed print of Hermione Gingold; a Three Days of Rain poster signed by the original Broadway cast; a "George Bush Is Only for Now" musical phrase signed by Avenue Q's Bobby Lopez and Jeff Marx; a Carol Channing as Dolly Levi Hirschfeld apron autographed by Hello, Dolly! composer Jerry Herman; and a Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life poster signed by the entire company.

Last year's Flea Market, held Sept. 25, 2005, raised $544,037 for BC/EFA. The booth that raised the most money during the 19th Annual Auction was hosted by the United Scenic Artists ($23,865). The show booth that raised the most money was Wicked, which brought in $7,854 for the charitable organization.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the nation’s largest industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organization. Since its founding in 1988 the organization has distributed over $100 million for services for people with AIDS, HIV or HIV-related illnesses.
