Duncan Sheik Plays NYMF Concert at Ars Nova, Sept. 27

By Matt Windman
27 Sep 2006

Duncan Sheik, Grammy-nominated vocalist and composer of the upcoming Broadway musical Spring Awakening, will receive a solo concert at Ars Nova as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

An Evening with Duncan Sheik will take place Sept. 27 at 8 PM, in the Penthouse at Ars Nova, 511 West 54th Street between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues.

NYMF members may purchase tickets for $50 by calling (212) 352-3101. Non-members may purchase a “NYMF at Nite” ticket for $75 (includes admission to An Evening with Duncan Sheik and the three Friday Night Parties at New World Stages) by calling (212) 352-3101. Only 75 tickets are available for the concert.

Accompanied by an acoustic band, and joined on stage by several special guests, the night will feature tunes new and old written by Sheik, including numerous pop songs such as “Barely Breathing.”

Grammy Award nominee Sheik's albums include "Duncan Sheik" (Atlantic Records, 1996), which became a certified Gold Record; "Humming" (Atlantic, 1998); "Phantom Moon" (Nonesuch Records, 2001); "Daylight" (Atlantic Records, 2002); and "White Limousine" (January, 2006).

He was Grammy Award nominated in 1997 in the category of Best Male Vocal. Sheik composed original music for the Public Theater's 2002 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night.

Spring Awakening, inspired by the expressionist drama by Frank Wedekind, begins previews 8 PM Nov. 16 at the Eugene O'Neill Theater, 230 W. 49th St. Opening night will be Dec. 10 at 6:30 PM.

The musical, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and direction by Michael Mayer, began performances May 19 at Atlantic Theater Company's Chelsea mainstage, a converted church building that informs the world of the play — Judeo-Christian rules, middle-class morality and academic pressures help crush the spirits of a group of teenagers in the European-set story.

The tale is drawn from Frank Wedekind's expressionistic 1891 drama about an adult world of parents, clergy and teachers who keep young people in the dark — and then punish them for being adrift in the night.
