Judy Kaye Is Part of New York City Opera's Sept. 19 Gala Celebration

By Andrew Gans
19 Sep 2006

Tony Award winner Judy Kaye, who received another Tony nomination last season for her performance in Souvenir, will be part of A Night at the Opera, which celebrates the opening of New York City Opera's 63rd season.

Kaye, who made her City Opera debut as Babe Williams in a 1989 production of The Pajama Game, will sing Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns" at the Sept. 19 gala benefit concert, according to a City Opera spokesperson. Kaye's NYCO credits also include productions of Brigadoon and Candide.

The 7:30 PM concert will be hosted by soprano Carol Vaness and will feature direction by Mark Lamos. The New York City Opera Orchestra will be conducted by George Manahan.

In addition to Kaye, the evening will also feature the vocal talents of Vinson Cole, Stephen Powell, Carol Vaness, Samuel Ramey, Pamela Armstrong, Elizabeth Futral, Vivica Genaux, Daniel Mobbs, Erin Morley, Brian Mulligan, James Valenti, and David Walker.

The evening — which honors CNN's Paula Zahn, who is a classically trained cellist — will also include a message from Beverly Sills and Placido Domingo and a special video montage highlighting the history of NYCO.

Judy Kaye played the role of Rosie in the Broadway company of Mamma Mia!, a part for which she received a 2002 Tony Award nomination. Kaye won the Tony for her performance as Carlotta in the New York production of The Phantom of the Opera and also received a Theatre World Award for her work in On the Twentieth Century. Kaye also starred on Broadway in Ragtime, and her two most recent solo recordings are titled "Diva by Diva" and "Songs from the Silver Screen."

A Night at the Opera will be held at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center, West 63rd Street and Columbus Avenue. Tickets, priced $16-$125, are available by calling (212) 721-6500. Visit www.nycopera.com for more information.
