Tony Winners Huffman and Glynn to Star in Pure Country Reading

By Andrew Gans
20 Sep 2006

Two staged readings of the new musical Pure Country will be presented to by-invitation-only audiences Sept. 25 and 26 at the Roy Arias Studios in The Times Square Arts Center.

Tony Award winners Carlin Glynn (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) and Cady Huffman (The Producers) will co-star in the 3 PM readings of Pure Country, which is adapted from the 1992 Warner Brothers film of the same name. Peter Masterson directs.

Pure Country features a book by Rex McGee and director Masterson and a score by Steve Dorff (music) and John Bettis (lyrics).

The musical, according to press notes, "tells the story of Del Hubbard, a country music superstar known only to his fans as 'Rusty,' who is cracking from the pressure of the endless show business grind. One day something snaps, and Rusty abandons his tour to return to his Texas stomping grounds, hoping to find the kind of life he’d only sung about."

Cady Huffman received Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards for her performance in The Producers. She has also appeared on Broadway in The Will Rogers Follies, Steel Pier, Big Deal, La Cage aux Folles and Dame Edna: The Royal Tour. Huffman has been seen on screen in “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “One Life to Live,” “Sunday on the Rocks,” “Hero” and “Space Marines” and will soon be seen in “Itty Bitty Titty Committee” and “Romance & Cigarettes.”

Carlin Glynn received the Tony Award and a Theatre World Award as well as a Drama Desk nomination for her performance in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which marked her Broadway debut. Her screen credits include "Whiskey School," "The Exonerated," "Lost Junction," "West of Here," "Judy Berlin," "A Woman Named Jackie," "Blood Red," "Gardens of Stone" and "The Trip to Bountiful."
