Broadway's Hairspray Takes Its Dance Contest to the Street

Now, hopeful star and starlets who think they've got the moves will have a chance to dance across the stage of the Neil Simon Theatre.
The producers of Hairspray have announced that the production will sponsor the "Hairspray ‘Big Bopper Dance Topper’ dance contest." The contest is presented by Ladies Home Journal and its website, LHJ.com. The winner of the contest, selected through internet voting, will get a chance to dance onstage as the ’60s come to life in the hit Broadway show.
Contestants are required to make a video of themselves dancing to the Hairspray song of their choice, and send it in to the show. Submissions will be accepted on the Hairspray website through Oct. 11. Those videos judged to be the best ten will be posted online. Internet voters will vote for their three favorites. Then a special Hairspray panel of judges—including Hairspray stars Diana DeGarmo and Haylie Duff—will narrow it down to the top three—and America will vote again.
The winner will be flown to New York, work with Hairspray’s dance captain, and dance on Broadway for one night.
Semi-finalists will be chosen and announced on Oct. 18 and the internet voting period continues from then through Nov. 15. On Nov. 22 the three finalists will be announced and the final round of internet voting will begin and run through Dec. 15. The winner will be announced on Dec. 20, just in time for Christmas.
