Old Globe to Pave Way for Avenue Q West Coast Debut in Summer 2007

By Ernio Hernandez
10 Oct 2006

The Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q will at long last reach the west coast when San Diego's Old Globe as part of the 2007 summer season.

The musical — featuring music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty and directed by Jason Moore — will run June 30-Aug. 5, 2007 at the historic Spreckels Theatre. Opening night is slated for July 11.

"Producing Avenue Q at this important downtown theatre is another milestone for The Old Globe. We are thrilled to bring this entertaining Broadway hit to San Diego audiences" said executive director Louis Spisto in an announcement. "Avenue Q has a distinctively 'downtown' sensibility, and we think it is the perfect show for the Globe's return to The Spreckels."

Avenue Q joins the Old Globe's previously announced 2007 summer season, featuring the Shakespeare Festival (Hamlet, Measure for Measure and The Two Gentlemen of Verona playing in repertory at the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre). The season will also include a production in the Old Globe Theatre and in the Cassius Carter Centre Stage, to be announced at a later date.

Broadway/San Diego will also be offering Avenue Q to its subscribers as part of their 2007-2008 subscription season.

For subscriptions and more information on the shows at The Old Globe, call Globe Ticket Services at (619) 23-GLOBE or visit www.theoldglobe.org.

The musical set on the fictitious New York street has already played a run in Las Vegas at the Wynn Las Vegas casino resort and currently enjoys a run at London's Noel Coward Theatre.

On Broadway, Avenue Q began previews July 11, 2003, and opened July 31 at the John Golden to positive critical and audience response. The show's creators Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx earned a Tony for their score as did bookwriter Jeff Whitty, and the musical itself garnered the top Best Musical prize at the 2004 Tony Awards. Jason Moore (Steel Magnolias) directed with musical direction by Gary Adler (Altar Boyz).

Avenue Q sends up popular children's television shows such as "Sesame Street" and "The Electric Company," while serving up a bounty of pop culture references and solving the mystery of the whereabouts of former "Diff'rent Strokes" child star Gary Coleman. The production bears the warning: "Full puppet nudity, not suitable for children."
