Songwriters—Including Yeston, Schwartz, Lopez and Marx—Are the Vocalists on New "If I Sing" CD

By Andrew Gans
12 Oct 2006

PS Classics has joined forces with cabaret producer Jamie deRoy on a new recording that celebrates songwriters from the worlds of Broadway, country and pop.

Entitled "If I Sing," the new CD, which is due in stores Nov. 14, boasts 16 songwriters performing their own material. Among the Broadway composers represented on the 13-track disc are Wicked's Stephen Schwartz, Nine's Maury Yeston, Closer Than Ever's Richard Malbty, Jr. and David Shire, Avenue Q's Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx and The Wild Party's Andrew Lippa.

Philip Chaffin, the co-founder of PS Classics, told Playbill.com, "Jamie [deRoy] spent almost six years gathering the songwriters she wanted. That she was able to corral this kind of talent on one album is pretty amazing in and of itself. We’d had the fun here at PS Classics of hearing composers sing their songs on demos and archival recordings, but we’d never had the pleasure of hearing them take on their own work in new performances, shaping them and arranging them and mixing them as they saw fit. It was a truly exhilarating experience, and I think a real feather in Jamie’s cap."

The complete track listing for "If I Sing" follows.
"Live Out Loud" (Andrew Lippa)
"From a Distance" (Julie Gold)
"All the Gold in California" (Larry Gatlin)
"The Long Cold Fall" (Rick Jensen)
"Nowhere to Go But Up" (Maury Yeston)
"How Could I Ever Know?" (Lucy Simon)
"If I Sing" (David Shire & Richard Maltby, Jr.)
"The Sweetest of Nights and the Finest of Days" (Shelly Markham)
"Somebody’s Out There" (Emily Bindiger)
"Tear It Up and Throw It Away" (Jeff Marx & Robert Lopez)
"Daddy’s Girl" (Jamie deRoy)
"Old Friend" (Nancy Ford & Gretchen Cryer)
"For Good" (Stephen Schwartz)

PS Classics is dedicated to the heritage of Broadway and the American popular song. For more information visit www.psclassics.com.
