O’Hare Is London’s New Mary Poppins

19 Oct 2006

Lisa O’Hare will play the world’s favorite nanny when she takes on the title role in Mary Poppins at London’s Prince Edward Theatre Nov. 6.

O’Hare will take over from Scarlett Strallen who in December performs with Judi Dench in the RSC’s musical version of The Merry Wives of Windsor.

O’Hare’s stage credits include Acorn Antiques and Anything Goes in the West End and Eliza Doolittle in the U.K. touring production of My Fair Lady.

The cast change for Marry Poppins also sees Rebecca Thornhill (Singin’ in the Rain, Chicago) step into the role of Winifred Banks, Zee Asha (Chicago) play Mrs. Brill, Romy Baskerville as Birdwoman and Howard Jones, who is currently playing Northbrook in the show while also understudying Bert, play Robertson Ay.

American star Gavin Creel continues as Bert in the Disney/Cameron Mackintosh co-production.

The Broadway version of the hit London musical is currently previewing at the New Amsterdam Theatre where it officially opens on Nov. 16.

As with the London production, the New York version is directed by Richard Eyre, with Gavin Lee reprising his performance as Bert. Ashley Brown (Beauty and the Beast) stars as the magical nanny, the role immortalized on screen by Julie Andrews in the 1964 movie.
