Wicked's Leung to Join Broadway's Rent

Telly Leung, who originated the role of Boq in the sit-down Chicago production of Wicked, will join the New York company of Rent in November.

Leung, who was most recently seen in the Paper Mill Playhouse's production of Godspell, told Playbill.com that he will begin performances in the Jonathan Larson musical at the Nederlander Theatre Nov. 20. Leung will play "Steve and others" and will also understudy the role of Angel.

"When Rent opened in 1996," Leung says, "I was 16 years old. Growing up in New York, with Broadway in my backyard, I must have seen Rent over 20 times — and was (and still am) a big Rent-head. It was one of the most moving experiences I've had in live theatre, and it was one of the shows that truly inspired me to pursue a career in acting. It is my dream come true to be part of this company."

Telly Leung made his Broadway debut in the revival of Flower Drum Song and then appeared in the revival of Stephen Sondheim's Pacific Overtures. He spent a year playing Boq in the Chicago production of Wicked, and his other theatrical credits include Zanna, Don't!; Thoroughly Modern Millie; The King and I; Jesus Christ Superstar; Children of Eden; Sweeney Todd; and Godspell. Leung can be heard on the "Wall to Wall Stephen Sondheim" recording, and his debut EP is titled "Getaway." Visit http://tellyonline.net for more information.

After an acclaimed run Off-Broadway, Rent transferred to Broadway's Nederlander Theatre, opening April 29, 1996. With book, music and lyrics by the late Jonathan Larson, the original cast included Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Idina Menzel, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Wilson Jermaine Heredia and Jesse L. Martin. Larson's score features such songs as "Rent," "I'll Cover You," "Seasons of Love," "One Song Glory."
