Noah Haidle's Vigils, a World Premiere About a Widow, Opens at Goodman

By Kenneth Jones
24 Oct 2006

Vigils, a new supernatural-flavored play by Mr. Marmalade author Noah Haidle, opens Oct. 24 in its world-premiere production at The Goodman Theatre in Chicago.

Kate Whoriskey directs the play at Goodman's Owen Theatre. Previews began Oct. 14.

Tony Award nominee Johanna Day (Proof) stars with Marc Grapey, Steve Key, Lillian Almaguer and Coburn Goss.

In the fantastical play, "two years after a fireman died trying to save a baby from a burning home, his widow (Day) is clinging to the past—literally. She has trapped her husband's soul in a box, and his body is wandering around aimlessly, ricocheting from one memory to the next, as body and soul try to come to terms with their actions during his life. When a handsome wooer arrives on the scene, the widow must decide between the past she knows and a future that she can only imagine."

Performances continue to Nov. 12.

The design team includes Walt Spangler (set and costumes); Jason Lyons (lighting); Michael Bodeen and Rob Milburn (sound); and John Boesche (projections).

Haidle's Mr. Marmalade had a run at the Roundabout Theatre Company's Laura Pels Theatre during the 2005-06 season.

Whoriskey has previously worked at the Goodman, directing the world premiere of Regina Taylor's Drowning Crow as well as The Rose Tattoo and Heartbreak House. In New York, she staged the world premiere of Fabulation, Or the Re-Education of Undine at Playwrights Horizons.
