Mary Poppins Featured on "20/20" Oct. 27

By Andrew Gans
24 Oct 2006

The Oct. 27 broadcast of ABC-TV's "20/20" will feature a segment devoted to the new Broadway musical Mary Poppins.

Bob Brown, a "20/20" correspondent, will discuss the journey Mary Poppins has made from book to screen to stage. "20/20" airs in the metropolitan area on WABC-TV Channel 7 at 10 PM; check local listings. For a preview of the upcoming segment, click here.

Mary Poppins — a co-production between Disney and Cameron Mackintosh — began previews at the New Amsterdam Theatre Oct. 14. A hit in London, the new musical will officially open on Broadway Nov. 16. Ashley Brown, recently seen on Broadway as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, stars as Mary Poppins, the role immortalized on screen by Academy Award winner Julie Andrews. Gavin Lee, who starred as Bert in the London production, re-creates his role opposite Brown.

Richard Eyre directs Mary Poppins, which is based on P.L. Travers' original stories and the 1964 Disney film. The musical features choreography and co-direction by Matthew Bourne and boasts original songs from the film — with music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman — as well as new songs and additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Julian Fellowes wrote the book.
