My Deah, Epperson's Comic Medea Play, Gets NYC Extension

By Kenneth Jones
26 Oct 2006

An extra two weeks have been added to the Off-Broadway run of John Epperson's My Deah, the comic Southern take on Euripides' Medea.

Originally announced to run to Nov. 11, the work by the artist best known as Lypsinka will now play to Nov. 26 at Abingdon's home at 312 W. 36th Street.

Nancy Opel stars in the title role, with one-time TV hunk Maxwell Caulfield playing a character named Gator.

Mark Waldrop directs.

The play had a sold-out workshop run in the Abingdon Theatre Complex's Dorothy Strelsin Theatre. It now plays the larger Havoc Theatre as a fully staged production, with "more blood! More laughs! More violence! All in the name of comedy."

In it, My Deah Hedgepeth "confronts her husband Gator, her friends, the Governor of Mississippi—and carries out her plans for revenge—y’all just might die laughin'!," according to Abingdon.

Epperson was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, and has made a name for himself as Lypsinka. As his famed lady and as other characters, he has appeared onstage in cabarets, concerts and on film ("Witch Hunt" with Dennis Hopper, "Wigstock: The Movie," "Angels in America," "Kinsey"). Epperson played The Stepmother in New York City Opera's staging of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella.

The cast of My Deah also features Peter Brouwer, Lori Gardner, Michael Hunsaker, Geoffrey Molloy, Jay Rogers, and Kevin Townley. Set and lighting design are by Mark Simpson, costumes are by Ramona Ponce and sound is by Matt Berman.

Performances play Tuesday–Saturday at 7:30 PM; Saturday at 2 PM and Sunday at 3 PM. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased by calling (212) 868-4444 or online at Smarttix.com.
